Russian Foreign Ministry recognizes independence of Crimea

AKIPRESS.COM - moscow The Russian Foreign Ministry said that a declaration of independence adopted by the Crimean Parliament is rightful and consistent with international law, the Foreign Ministry's press service reported on March 11.

The Russian Foreign Ministry noted that the declaration has international legal justification, in particular the UN Charter. The provision was approved by the UN International Court on July 22, 2014 in relation to Kosovo.

The International Court of Justice confirmed the fact that unilateral declaration of independence does not violate any rule of international law as stated in the provision adopted at the request of the UN General Assembly.

The Russian Federation will fully respect free will of the people of Crimea in the referendum, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

In turn, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry protested the Russian Foreign Ministry's statement on recognition of legitimate declaration of independence of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol.

The decision taken by the Crimean Verkhovna Rada is unconstitutional, illegal and void, the Ukrainian Ministry said. This document violates national legislation of Ukraine and provisions of international instruments, including statement of the President of the Security Council dated July 20, 1993, which was unanimously supported by all members of the UN Security Council, including Russia.

Ukraine strongly condemns direct interference of Russia in internal affairs of the country. Russia's actions directly contradict fundamental principles of international law and generally recognized principles of co-existence, according to the Ukrainian authorities.

The Foreign Ministry of Ukraine condemns practice of provocative statements and any actions that are aimed at aggravating the situation in Crimea.

Ukraine urges the Russian side for de-escalation of the situation, direct dialogue and full compliance with norms and principles of international law and inter-state relations, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry stressed.

Earlier, the Crimean Parliament adopted a declaration in support of the region's independence from Ukraine and intention to enter into Russian territory.
