One in 3 Kyrgyz women in Pamir Mountains of Afghanistan die in childbirth

AKIPRESS.COM - One in 3 Kyrgyz women in the Pamir Mountains of Afghanistan currently die in childbirth and one half of all children will die before they reach the age of 5, Crosslink Development International, community development and aid organization said.

Around 1,500 ethnic Kyrgyz people living at an elevation of 13,000 feet in Afghanistan have little access to resources including education, food, roads or medical care. The literacy rate is less than 1%.

Crosslink Development International has been working in Central Asia since 1994, with projects currently active in Kyrgyzstan and Afghanistan.

CDI provides necessary educational materials, helps address issues that prevent Kyrgyz children’s education in Afghanistan. Partnering with the National Children’s Hospital in Bishkek CDI provides women’s health education, assessments and treatment.
