Clashes in Northern Yemen kill and wound dozens

AKIPRESS.COM - Yemen_clashes Security officials and tribesmen in Yemen say clashes between Shiite rebels and Islamist tribesmen backed by national army units have killed and wounded dozens in a northern city.

Some media report the death toll reached at least 120.

Officials say the fighting intensified over the past 48 hours near the main prison of Amran, where military jets bombed Shiite Hawthi rebels trying to take control of the city. Officials could not give specific casualty figures for the fighting, AP reported.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief journalists.

The Hawthis waged a six-year insurgency in the north, which officially ended in 2010. But the Hawthis, who belong to the Zaydi branch of Shiite Islam, recently have clashed with Sunni ultraconservatives.
