AKIPRESS.COM - Ukraine will get 15 million euro from NATO for effectuating its military reforms plus aid on a bilateral basis from various member-states of the North-Atlantic pact, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said Thursday after the end of a session of the NATO-Ukraine Commission in Wales, ITAR-TASS reports.

A well-informed diplomatic source told Itar-Tass earlier NATO and Ukraine had set up four trust funds for financing reforms in and modernization of the Ukrainian armed forces. He said the decision had been endorsed at a meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Commission and about a dozen countries had made public their plans to chip in.

The source said the trust funds would aim to reform and modernize logistics, combat control, cyber defenses, the military medical service and rehabilitation of wounded servicemen. NATO is rendering tangible assistance to Ukraine, Rasmussen said, adding that it has drafted a comprehensive package of measures, which will help Kiev to assure its security.

Also, the bloc will continue its consultations to help Kiev reform the sphere of defence. Independent, sovereign, and stable Ukraine that would be committed to democracy and respect for law is a key to Euro-Atlantic security and it is a goal that is shared by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, Rasmussen said.

He meted out standard accusations against Russia saying it had aggravated the Ukrainian crisis against defusing it. Rasmussen said NATO remains united in its support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within it believes to be the country’s internationally recognized borders.

By tradition, Rasmussen claimed Russia had not made a single step to scale down the tense situation around Ukraine.
