Spain's Princess Cristina to face tax fraud trial

AKIPRESS.COM - princess-cristina_2526146b A Spanish judge on Monday ordered Princess Cristina de Borbón to stand trial on tax-fraud charges, according to the media reports.

Princess Cristina is the sister of the country’s king, this will be the first trial of a Spanish monarch’s relative.

Judge José Castro officially charged the princess with two counts on tax fraud in a long-running corruption case, in the last step before trial under Spain’s legal system.

The decision is the latest step in a four-year probe that has eroded the popularity of Spain’s monarchy. It began during the reign of Princess Cristina’s father, Juan Carlos, who abdicated in June, and centers on Nóos, a not-for-profit sports-events consultancy run by Mr. Urdangarin.

Judge Castro has been investigating whether the couple funded an extravagant lifestyle by diverting millions of euros in public funds destined for Nóos into the couple’s real estate and asset-management firm Aizoon. The princess was a Nóos board member.

The princess and her husband have previously denied wrongdoing.
