AKIPRESS.COM - A 6.5 magnitude earthquake hit southern coast of Sumatra Island on Thursday morning, with no reports of injuries or damage and no tsunami warning issued, according to Jakarta Globe.

National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho recorded the West earthquake in 72 kilometers-depth sea, around 79 kilometers southwest of West Sumatra province southern coast or 115 kilometers northwest of Muko-Muko Sea in Bengkulu.

“The quake was triggered by subduction activities of the plates of Indo-Australian and Eurasian in top of benioff zone,” Sutopo said in a statement on Thursday.

He added that hard shocks were reported in West Sumatra's South Pesisir and Bengkulu's Muko-Muko districts for around 20 to 30 seconds, with some people panicked and fled from their residences.

The quake was also felt by people in Padang, the capital of West Sumatra, and other neighboring cities Bukit Tinggi and Padang Panjang.

Sutopo added that small shocks were also felt in South Solok, Jambi, North Bengkulu, Bengkulu, Padang Pariaman, Pekanbaru, Pasaman and Tanah Datar.

“The impacts and losses due to this quake are still being collected by the agency,” said Sutopo.
