EU provides bilateral support to education reforms in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan

AKIPRESS.COM - eu The areas of education, the rule of law and the environment have been given particular attention in the EU Strategy for Central Asia. The EU wants to reinforce its common action in those fields and intensify interaction between experts through existing platforms and projects, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini said.

An ambitious working programme has been set up for all three platforms, she added.

The EU has moved forward with the Education Platform and last year's decision by Poland and Latvia to take a leading role in it by focusing respectively on Higher Education and Vocational Education and Training is to be welcomed. This engagement from two Member States in its implementation contributes to strengthening the Central Asia Education Initiative and represents a major step forward to help convey the various experiences of EUMS in the education reform process and during their transitions to more efficient education systems, Federica Mogherini went on saying.

The first Meeting of Ministers for Education of the EUMS and of Central Asia took place in Riga in June 2015 under the auspices of the Latvian Presidency and created a new momentum for a specific EU-CA high level policy dialogue on education. The Ministers adopted a joint Communiqué which defines the priorities for EU-CA cooperation in this area.

In the framework of EU Education platform Latvia along with European Commission co — organised the Regional Conference ‘National Qualification Frameworks in Central Asia: current situation and Cooperation perspectives’ on 20 — 22 April 2016 in Riga. All five Central Asian countries (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan) participated in the event.

The EU uses a combination of bilateral, regional and global actions to support the Education Initiative. The EU provides bilateral support to education reforms in three CA countries (Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan) and several regional programmes, she concluded.
