Air Astana extends pan-Asia-Europe connections

AKIPRESS.COM - Kazakhstan flag carrier Air Astana is aiming to boost its connecting traffic between Asia and Eastern Europe by up 24,000 passengers by the end of 2017, following the opening of a new Almaty-Teheran route earlier this month, reports ATW.

The new Teheran 3X-weekly Teheran-Almaty schedule uses Embraer E190 aircraft configured in a two-class, 97-seat layout.

Air Astana said it was particularly looking to boost connecting traffic from Almaty through to China, with up to 60% of the passengers taking the connecting services through from Teheran onward to Beijing, China.

Air Astana VP-marketing Ibrahim Zhanlyel said the airline also offers significant connectivity to other Asian destinations, such as Urumqi and potentially Ulan Batur, Mongolia, following the ASEAN Summit in Laos in July 2016.

Zhanlyel added the airline also plans for transit traffic element to make up a majority of the numbers on other routes throughout the Central Asian Republics.

The carrier expects more than 12,000 passengers on the Almaty-Tehran route by the end of 2016, with 260,000 transit connections by year-end compared to 180,000 at end 2015.

Air Astana said it intends to boost its home hub at Almaty as a key Europe-Asia transit point with increased frequencies to other regional destinations such as St. Petersburg, Russia-Almaty, and from Almaty-Kiev, Ukraine.
