Two hostage takers 'neutralised' in Normandy church siege

AKIPRESS.COM - French police Two assailants who had taken five people hostage in the church at Saint-Étienne-du-Rouvray near Rouen were killed in a police operation to end the assault, reported The Jerusalem Post.

A priest taken hostage in a church in Normandy, northern France, was killed with a blade.

The source said it looked like the priest had had his throat slit. The French Foreign Ministry reported that a second hostage was in life-threatening condition following the attack.

The hostages included a priest, two nuns and two worshippers.

French President François Hollande is expected at the scene, his office said.

The attack is the latest in a string of deadly assaults in Europe. In France, the Normandy attack comes 12 days after a 31-year-old Tunisian killed 84 people in the French Riviera city of Nice when he ploughed his heavy goods truck into a crowd of revelers. Islamic State claimed the attack in Nice.

France has been under emergency rule since Islamist militants killed 130 people last November in multiple attacks on Paris and outside the Stade de France stadium.
