Kyrgyzstan discusses implementation of UN resolution on non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction

AKIPRESS.COM - conference2_meeting A two-day roundtable to discuss the National Action Plan (NAP) on the implementation of the UN Security Council Resolution 1540 on effective measures against the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction concluded today in the village of Bulan-Sogottu, Issyk-Kul region.

Representatives of state institutions involved in the NAP’s implementation, including the Ministry of Interior, State Border Service, State Customs Service, Ministry of Health, National Academy of Science and representatives of civil society participated in the event.

The roundtable discussion served as a platform to improve the knowledge of involved state institutions and civil society activists on the UN Security Council Resolution 1540, review the NAP and to produce recommendations on implementation of the resolution including export-import control, biosecurity, legal basis for non-proliferation and possible ways of updating the NAP to address the issue of proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, or its components.

Anna Nersesyants, Acting Head of the OSCE Center in Bishkek, noted that joint efforts to implement the UN Security Council Resolution 1540 will help to strengthen cooperation between the authorities and civil society.

Aidai Kurmanova, State Secretary of the Ministry of Economy of Kyrgyzstan emphasized the need to strengthen the national export control system, surveillance and control of the movement of materials and equipment, which can be used for development and production of weapons of mass destruction.

The discussion was organized by the Ministry of Economy with the support of the OSCE Center in Bishkek and the OSCE Conflict Prevention Center.
