AKIPRESS.COM - Development of the police system of Kyrgyzstan in the context of security sector reform is being discussed at a two-day international conference, which opened in Bishkek on September 22.

Organized by the OSCE Center in Bishkek in cooperation with Kyrgyzstan’s Interior Ministry, Government, Parliament and Defense Council and the OSCE Secretariat’s Strategic Police Matters Unit, the conference will focus on police reform in the context of the wider security sector reform recently launched by the political leadership of Kyrgyzstan.

The Conference brings together some 100 delegates representing national stakeholders, civil society and international experts from Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Lithuania, Russia and Tajikistan to raise awareness on the best international experiences of the OSCE’s participating states.

“This is a unique opportunity for stakeholders to choose the most appropriate model for Kyrgyzstan to reform its law enforcement system,” said Anna Nersesyants, acting head of the OSCE Center’s in Bishkek. “Our goal is to help Kyrgyzstan create democratic, law enforcement institutions that meet international standards. Only by united and coordinated efforts we can achieve this goal.”

Kursan Asanov, Deputy Minister of Interior said: "Measures to reform the system of law enforcement bodies approved by the President of Kyrgyzstan represent a new stage in the reform of the entire law enforcement and security system of our country to be implemented in terms of consistency and continuity."

The international conference will be followed by a roundtable discussion at the Police Academy on 24 September to discuss potentials, prerequisites, constraints and prospects in reforming training and education system of the police and other law enforcement bodies.

The aim is to share and equip the participants with the knowledge necessary to better understand and tackle police processes, law enforcement and security sector reform.
