AKIPRESS.COM - Mongolia is observing the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (WDR) for the third year from November 13 to 17, according to The UB Post.

The World Health Organization and the United Nations Road Safety Collaboration encourage governments and NGOs worldwide to commemorate the WDR, endorsed as a global advocacy day for road traffic injury prevention by the United Nations on October 26, 2005. This day is observed every third Sunday of November, on November 20 this year.

This year, 71,003 road and traffic accidents occurred in Ulaanbaatar as of October, according to the City Traffic Police Department. The rate is 7.2 percent higher than that recorded in 2015.

Overall, violations of traffic safety rules have declined by 13 percent nationwide, 14.5 percent in Ulaanbaatar and by 11.3 percent in remote areas since last year.

Statistics shows that traffic accidents caused 418 deaths and 1,082 injuries since January 2016. Nearly 60 percent of these road collisions were recorded outside of the capital city. Road collisions killed 48 children and injured 199 this year alone in Mongolia.
