Assad optimistic about Syria peace talks in Astana – French Lawmaker

AKIPRESS.COM - Syrian President Assad meets Putin in MoscowSyrian President Bashar Assad is positive about the Syria peace talks in Astana and believes that an agreement might be reached there, a French lawmaker told Sputnik following a meeting with Assad on Sunday.

Turkey and Russia brokered ceasefire deal begun late December and the main forces of the armed opposition sign a document expressing a readiness to start peace talks.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on December 26 that Russia, Iran, Turkey and Syrian President Bashar al Assad had all agreed to hold the talks in Astana although no date has been set.

On January 4, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said the Syria peace talks in Astana would start on January 23 if the truce would be properly observed.

"I am very positive about Astana talks, he said pointing that on the contrary to Geneva talks, there could be a true representation of real Syrian groups and parties in Astana. He thinks it is possible to reach an agreement there," a member of the delegation of the French lawmakers, Nicolas Dhuicq, said.

"He was much more confident about country's future and these are his own words than when we saw him during our previous trip in March, because the military situation has improved. He was sorry for the incident in Aleppo airport, when our group came under Islamists' shelling," Dhuicq added.
