Syrian peace talks in Astana very complex: Kremlin

AKIPRESS.COM - Syrian peace talks in Kazakhstan are "hugely complex," said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Tuesday when he was asked to comment on the Syrian opposition delegation's refusal to attend the meeting.

"We realized from the very beginning that these are hugely complex talks," he told reporters on a conference call. "The work continues."

Osama Abu Zaid, a spokesman for the Syrian rebels said they had taken a final decision not to go to the talks as a result of Russia's failure to end what the opposition says are widespread violations of a Turkish-Russian brokered ceasefire last December.

"Currently the decision is not to go as a result of Russia continuing its crimes in Syria against civilians and its support of the crimes of the Syrian regime," he said, adding that they had informed Turkey, a main backer of the rebels, of their decision.

The third round of Astana talks is taking place in Astana on March 14-15.  Astana has already hosted two rounds of Russia-brokered Syria peace talks on January 23-24 and on February 15-16. The previous meetings aimed to shore up a widely violated ceasefire between the sides that was brokered by Russia and Turkey, which backs the rebels.
