Turkmenistan parliament elects woman as first ever Turkmen Ombudsman

AKIPRESS.COM - The Mejlis of Turkmenistan elected Yazdursun Gurbannazarova as the country's Ombudsman, official media report.

The respective parliament resolution was signed at the regular nineteenth meeting of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan of fifth convocation, which took place March 20.

"The activities of the Ombudsman are regulated by the relevant law of Turkmenistan, which meets the country's international obligations in the humanitarian sphere, taking into account the practice and experience of the world's most developed democracies, and creating strong guarantees for the protection of human rights and freedoms by the Ombudsman, their observance and respect by state authorities and officials," the statement said.

As envisaged by this law, three candidates were nominated for Ombudsman and one was elected by secret ballot.

Yazdursun Gurbannazarova is the former Director of the Turkmen National Institute for Democracy and Human Rights.
