Belarus signes EAEU customs code

AKIPRESS.COM - Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko has signed the Customs Code of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU),  his spokesperson Natalya Eismont told reporters on Wednesday.

Last year, the Belarusian leader refused to sign the document, which became a stumbling block in Belarus-Russia relations, BelarusFeed reported.

Alexander Lukashenko had previously criticized the Code because “many things that were supposed to work aren’t working”. However, Russia had some trump cards to play: decreased oil supplies, unresolved gas prices and loans that Belarus had been waiting for.

After the talks between Luksahenko and Putin in St. Petersburg on 3 April the sides declared that “all disputes had been settled“.

The Customs Code of the EAEU will replace the corresponding document of the Customs Union adopted in 2009. The document will lay the foundations for the transition to unified customs regulations in the Eurasian Economic Union.

It is planned that the Customs Code will come into force on 1 July, 2017.
