Life in rural Kyrgyzstan: It's almost May and east Issyk-Kul is still snowy

AKIPRESS.COM - Spring comes almost 2 months later to the east Issyk-Kul than to Karakol and other parts of the region.

While weather in Bishkek was very warm with plenty of sun (+30C) on April 26, a heating season has not yet ended for the Shakhty-Jyrgalan villagers.

The village was founded in 1932 around the coalmine Shakhta Jyrgalan, which used to be developed during Soviet times. With Kyrgyzstan's becoming independent nation, the coal production in this area has declined significantly and the coalmine faced shutdown. But local miners still produce coal here in small amounts.

The mine produced 8,333 tons of coal in past 8 months, according to Turmush news agency.
