Competition in the eight-day event resumes on Friday, alongside the Asian Kickboxing Championship 2016/2017.
Day five of competition in the Ashgabat 2017 Weightlifting Complex saw Li Rongyan (CHN) cruise to gold in the women’s 75kg, and compatriot Zhao Yongchao (CHN) come up on top in the Combined classification in the men’s 85kg category, despite not winning either of the separate events.Women’s 75kg
Li Rongyan (CHN) delivered an incredible display in the women’s 75kg, with the 25-year-old 2009 Junior World Champion lifting a Combined 250kg, 13kg more than Yao Chi-Ling (TPE), who took silver. Yeom Yunjeong (KOR) took the Combined bronze with 217kg.
Li was the only lifter to start the Snatch above 100kg, lifting 105kg in her first attempt to finish with 110kg. In the Clean & Jerk she started at 135kg, ten kilograms more than Yao. After Yao successfully lifted 136 in her final attempt, Li finished with a confident 137 and 140 to seal her well-deserved haul of three gold medals. Yao took three silvers and Yeom Yunjeong (KOR) grabbed bronze in the Snatch and in the Combined events, with Omadoy Otakuziyeva (UZB) snatching the Clean & Jerk bronze.
About starting much heavier than her opponents, the fresh champion said: “Those weights are pretty easy for me. My personal records are 115kg in the snatch and 150kg in the Clean & Jerk.
“I’m happy with this result because it’s my first time in the Asian Championships.”

Men’s 85kg
Two times silver equalled Combined gold for Zhao Yongchao (CHN) in the men’s 85kg. The 22-year-old Chinese lifter totalled 356kg, four kilograms more than Saleh Cheraghi (IRI).
The 25-year-old from Iran won the snatch event with 162kg, but had to settle for Combined silver after missing 197kg in his final Clean & Jerk attempt. Cheraghi received his Snatch gold medal from compatriot and 2016 Olympic Champion Kianoush Rostami.
After lifting 196 in his second attempt, Zhao attempted 200kg in the Clean & Jerk, but that proved a little too much. Toshiki Yamamoto (JPN), therefore, collected the Clean & Jerk gold with 199kg. The 25-year-old Japanese lifter also secured the Combined bronze.
