AKIPRESS.COM - An historic day for Shi Jiaqi, who won her first international tournament outside China in comprehensive style, sweeping all golds in the women’s 90kg category on Day 6 of the Senior Asian Weightlifting Championships in Ashgabat, Luarel news services said.
Farkhodek Sobirov grabbed Combined gold in the men’s 94kg. Competition in the eight-day event resumes on Saturday, alongside the Asian Kickboxing Championship 2016/2017.
Women’s 90kg
Lo Ying-Yuan (TPE) provided the sole challenge to Shi Jiaqi (CHN) in the women’s 90kg category. The 20-year-old from Chinese Taipei came close to gold in the Clean & Jerk event with 136kg, but had to settle for three silver medals when her 17-year-old Chinese rival lifted 137kg in the Clean & Jerk for a total of 245kg. Lo totalled 231. Dolera Davronova (UZB) took the Combined (204kg) and Clean & Jerk (115kg) bronze, after she had to bow her head for Huda Salim Neam Al-Saedi (IRQ) with 90kg in the Snatch.
Champion Shi had not doubted her chance of winning: ”My personal bests are 113 in Snatch and 143 in Clean & Jerk. I was very confident going into this competition.”

Men’s 94kg
Farkhodek Sobirov (UZB) took Combined gold in the men’s 94kg after a fierce battle with Seyedayoob Mousavijarahi (IRI). The 19-year-old Uzbek lifted 175kg to win the Snatch event by 11kg, but faced tough competition from his 22-year-old rival from Iran in the Clean & Jerk. Sobirov lifted 205, and, after Mousavijarahi secured the Clean & Jerk gold with 206kg, he almost managed to lift 215kg for the Combined gold in his third attempt, however, did not manage to stabilise after lifting the barbell above his head. Mousavijarahi totalled 372 versus 380 for Sobirov.
The Combined bronze went to Wang Ching-Chieh (TPE), who totalled 317 after grabbing bronze with 145 in the Snatch event. Huacong Zangh (CHN) took Clean & Jerk bronze with 201kg, after missing 165kg in three Snatch events.
Champion Sobirov said: “I did not expect to win. When my opponent [Mousavijarahi] tried to lift 215kg, I really expected him to succeed, but he didn’t and I’m very happy.”
Sobirov will be back for the Ashgabat 2017 5th Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games in September. “I like it a lot here. Ashgabat is a beautiful city and I will come back to try and win a medal again.”
