Number of inmates serving prison terms for terrorism and extremism in Kyrgyzstan has tripled since 2009

AKIPRESS.COM - More than 180 convicts are serving sentences in correctional colonies of Kyrgyzstan for terrorism and extremism, State Penitentiary Service Chairman of Kyrgyzstan Taalaibek Japarov said during the roundtable.

This category of convicts is growing having tripled since 2009, he said.

“Not only Kyrgyzstan, but also many other countries’ penitentiary systems haven’t yet developed effective measures on prevention of spread of extremism in detention facilities. An outdated infrastructure, shortage of money, work condition, shortage of personnel are creating obstacles for effective implementation of the state policy on prevention of extremism in penitentiary institutions,” he noted.

Participants of the event, the guests from Canada, UK, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, following the talks visited the correctional colony #47, where they got acquainted with the conditions of detention of convicts.
