UN, Tajikistan hold joint high-level conference on partnership in sustainbable development in Dushanbe

AKIPRESS.COM - The Government of Tajikistan and United Nations system in Tajikistan jointly held a high-level conference on partnership for sustainable development during the visit of UN Secretary-General António Guterres to Tajikistan, the UNDP reports.

The conference was opened by President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon, and UN Secretary-General António Guterres gave a key note address. It was attended by several Ministers and high-level officials from governmental agencies, diplomatic corps and representatives of development agencies, civil society, private sector and scientific institutions.

The Sustainable Development Agenda 2030 and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were accepted unanimously by the UN Member States in September 2015 with a core principle to leave no one behind. The conference sparkled rich discussion on nationalizing SDGs in the National Development Strategy 2030 and identified practical ways to achieve the Goals and methods for strengthening partnerships and cooperation at local, national and regional levels, and pondered innovative financing of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

Minister of Economy, Trade and Development Mr. Nematullo Hikmatullozoda presented the National Development Strategy 2030 as mechanism for SDGs implementation and provided strategic basis to discuss nationalization of SDGs. The conference focused on three key themes, namely: impact of climate change on development of Tajikistan; food security, agriculture and scaling up nutrition; and innovative financing ways for achieving SDGs. The panelists shared international best practices on how to ensure food security and promote inclusive and equitable health services and nutrition, so no one is left behind.

Furthermore, the conference discussed means of achieving SDGs and mobilizing development financing using innovative ways such as crowdfunding, digital payment systems, mobile money etc. and to promote social entrepreneurship combining profit making approaches with social and environmental responsibility.

The rich discussion in the conference will inform the SDG road map that the Government of Tajikistan is currently finalizing. Tajikistan is the first country in Central Asia to start nationalizing SDGs and has also volunteered to present the national review on SDG progress in UNs High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in July in New York under the auspices of UN Economic and Social Council.
