Uzbekistan softening position on construction of Rogun HPP in Tajikistan

AKIPRESS.COM - Foreign Minister of Uzbekistan Abdulaziz Kamilov said that his country is content with construction of Rogun hydropower plant in Tajikistan. But the national interests of Uzbekistan should be taken into consideration, according to him.

The respective position was announced at the press conference in Tashkent on July 5.

According to Kamilov, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan should come to an agreement concerning the construction of Rogun HPP.

"Tajik authorities must take into consideration the environmental affects of the construction as well," he noted.

The Minister said he hopes that the expert talks on distribution of water resources in the region will start soon.

Uzbekistan during the presidency of Islam Karimov was strongly opposing construction of Rogun HPP.

President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon, in turn, was promising that Tajikistan will never leave other countries without water.
