Tajik general jailed for life goes on hunger strike

AKIPRESS.COM - Gaffor Mirziyoyev, once an influential Tajik general convicted of coup attempt for live imprisonment, went on a hunger strike, his sister Oisha Mirziyoyeva said referring to the leadership of the prison, the Tajik language service of the RFE/RL reports.

According to her, the former general went on hunger strike in protest against the fact that the Tajik authorities ignored his request to review the criminal case against him. Now he is held in a solitary confinement.

Oisha Mirziyoyeva believes that her brother's letters on reconsidering his criminal case are not sent to the administration of the President and other structures.

“He is a supporter of the Government, but he insists on re-investigation of his case on lawful grounds. My brother repeatedly addressed his letter to the Parliament, the Constitutional Court, other instances, however, his petitions did not even go beyond the prison,” Mirziyoyeva said.

Gaffor Mirziyoyev, during the civil war in Tajikistan was one of the influential field commanders of the National Front, which brought the current leadership of the country to the power. After the civil war, he was a commander of the National Guard, head of the Drug Control Agency, president of the National Olympic Committee of Tajikistan. The “Gray” (Gaffor Mirziyoyev) was arrested in August 2004 and two years later the military prosecutor's office of the country stated that he committed 112 crimes. The former general was charged in terrorism, sabotage, organization of murders, coup attempt and illegal storage of weapons. So he was sentenced to life imprisonment.
