Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan to discuss implementations of UN Resolution on preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction

AKIPRESS.COM - Members of Tajikistan’s national working group responsible for the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1540 on preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, together with representatives of relevant ministries and other state agencies from Belarus and Kyrgyzstan, will take part in an OSCE-supported trilateral peer review meeting from August 2-5 in Dushanbe.

This is the second such trilateral meeting since August 2016, the OSCE reported.

The participants will review progress made in the implementation of Resolution 1540. Experts from the UN 1540 Committee, the UN Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific and the US Export Control and Related Border Security (EXBS) Programme are also taking part in the meeting, which is hosted by the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Agency of Tajikistan’s Academy of Sciences.

Opening the event, the Head of the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Agency, Ilkhom Mirsaidov, said that non-proliferation and the fight against violent radicalization and terrorism in all of its aspects are priority issues for the Government of Tajikistan.

“The adoption of Tajikistan’s national actions plan on the implementation of the Resolution in 2016 and practical implementation results to date prove the genuine contribution of the country towards maintaining international security.”

The Head of the OSCE Programme Office in Dushanbe, Tuula Yrjölä, underlined the usefulness of the trilateral format of the meeting: “The fact that representatives of three OSCE participating States have gathered here in Dushanbe today to talk about the implementation of Resolution 1540 proves the pertinence of regional co-operation and the continued need for joint efforts in fulfilling the accepted obligations under the Resolution.”

The three states will work on a joint report on implementation and later submit it to the UNSC 1540 Committee and the UN Security Council.
