OSCE and Red Crescent Society organize summer camp for Dachi Su children affected by plane crash

AKIPRESS.COM - The OSCE Programme Office in Bishkek and the National Red Crescent Society of Kyrgyzstan organized a summer camp for 20 children affected by the Dacha-Suu plane crash in the village of Kara Oi, in the northern Issyk Kyl region from August 17-20, the OSCE reported.

As part of the summer camp, children between the ages of 10 and 15 participated in various recreational activities such as team-building games, boat trips, sport exercises including swimming as well as painting and clay modelling.

Nine volunteers from the Kyrgyz National Red Crescent Society provided sessions where children learnt about positive coping mechanisms to deal with anxiety and other post-traumatic stress symptoms. The children also received school stationery and gadgets to prepare them for the start of the new academic year.

The summer rehabilitation camp was the final part of the psychological relief and social support provided with proceeds from the OSCE Charity Ball Project. Last year the OSCE Charity Ball raised 20,000 Euros following the crash of a cargo jet into Dacha-Suu village in the suburbs of the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek on 16 January 2016.

The initial work undertaken as a result of the OSCE Charity Ball donation involved training locals in psychological self-management, developing a manual on psycho-social assistance during emergencies, and creating a database of volunteer psychologists. These activities were jointly implemented by Kyrgyz National Red Crescent Society and the Kyrgyzstan-based Child Rights Defenders League.
