Maker Space Science Lab to open in Bishkek

AKIPRESS.COM - On September 26, 2017 at 11.00 a.m. the U.S. Embassy in Kyrgyzstan together with the Bayalinov Youth and Children’s Library will launch the Maker Space Science Lab at the Bishkek American Center, the Embassy said.

The Maker Space Movement is the intersection of science/technology/engineering/mathematics (STEM), technology, innovation, creativity and do-it-yourself production through robotics, experiments, technology, crafts and 3D printing.

The Maker Space Science Lab Fair will be held at Bishkek American Center on September 26-27, engaging youth and adults of all ages and backgrounds. It will showcase Maker Space equipment, giving the audience a unique opportunity to have hands-on experience with 3-D printing, robotics, electronics experiments, gadgets and other STEM materials.

Other Fair stations will include student interaction with five women tech entrepreneurs who participated in a U.S. government STEM exchange to the United States. They will share their experience on visiting science, technology and engineering companies and programs in the United States. These young leaders will inspire the young Kyrgyz generation, especially young girls and women, to go into STEM-related careers.

For younger Fair participants, there will also be reading activities with children’s books “Rosie Revere, Engineer” and “Iggy Peck, Architect” by Andrea Beaty, which the Embassy partnered with local contacts to translate and publish in the Kyrgyz language. The Book Translation Program has translated more than 105,000 American books into Kyrgyz to encourage reading among youth and promote the local publishing industry. The translated books are distributed free of charge to seven American Corners, and to schools and public libraries throughout the country.

The American Corner staff will now take the Maker Space Science Lab Fair on the road to American Corners in Jalalabad, Kant, Karakol, Naryn, Osh, and Talas. After this tour, the Maker Space Science Lab equipment and materials will be based at Bishkek American Center for regular STEM programming. This program supports goals of economic development, job creation and entrepreneurship and helps to build a robust educational system in the STEM fields.

The Fair is supported by the U.S. Embassy in Kyrgyzstan through the American Corners Program. Representatives of the Ministry of Culture, Information and Tourism of Kyrgyzstan and the U.S. Embassy; Bishkek and Chui Oblast high school and university students; librarians and members of the general public will attend the opening ceremony.
