Mongolian ruling party chooses new prime minister

AKIPRESS.COM - Mongolia’s ruling People’s Party has voted on a new prime minister after dismissing the previous one over allegations of corruption.

The party’s conference chose Deputy Prime Minister Khurelsukh Ukhnaa from among three candidates early Tuesday. He will be approved as prime minister when Parliament resumes next week, Associated Press reported.

In a speech to the gathering, the party chairman and speaker of parliament, known as the Grand Hural, Enkhbold Mieygombo, called for an end to cronyism in filling government positions.

Whoever is elected prime minister will need to restore unity within the ruling party and address critical economic and social issues facing the landlocked country of 3 million people, which is sagging under the burden of a national debt of about $23 billion, or twice its annual economic output.
