Life in rural Kyrgyzstan: This remote village has no Internet, but good old-fashioned library

AKIPRESS.COM - Ak-Shiyrak village in Issyk-Kul region has a lot of book lowers, local librarian Mahat Kasimalieva says.

The village library bought new books for 50,000 soms last year, she says.

The library has 7000 books and many readers. "We plan library renovation this year, if we will find sponsors. We deliver books to the border posts and animal breeders. We don't have internet here, that's why the youth reads a lot here," she said.

One does not simply get to the village. It requires overcoming about 300 km from the district center to the village through the Sook gorge and the Kara-Sai border checkpoint.

Winter in the syrt zone of the village lasts 7 months and air temperatures can plummet to -40 degrees Celsius.

The village is 3,820 meters above the sea level.

Before visiting the location, it's highly recommended to go through doctor's examination of heart and blood pressure.

Despite the harsh weather challenges, locals say they are not ready to leave this beautiful place.

Today, Ak-Shiyrak rural district is home to 78 households and 548 people, most of whom are engaged in animal husbandry.
