Mongolian ex-president to run for parliamentary by-election

AKIPRESS.COM - Mongolia's former President Nambar Enkhbayar has been chosen as a candidate of the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party (MPRP) for the country's parliamentary by-election in June, the MPRP announced Friday, Xinhua reports.

The decision to nominate Enkhbayar for the by-election of the 42nd constituency of parliamentary election in the eastern Khentii Province was made during the MPRP's conference on Friday, Buya Tulga, secretary of the party, told a press conference here.

Enkhbayar, the MPRP's chairman, served as the country's prime minister from 2000 to 2004, as speaker of the parliament from 2004 to 2005, and as the president of Mongolia from 2005 to 2009.

He was banned from standing for the presidential elections in 2017 because of registration irregularities and his conviction for graft in 2012.

Eleven different political parties will compete agaist each other in the election slated for June 30 to fill a vacant seat after parliament member Dorjdugar Gantulga stepped down amid what he called a "politically motivated" rape allegation, the General Election Commission of Mongolia said in a statement, adding that the parties have to announce their candidates by May 28.
