AKIPRESS.COM - Queen Elizabeth, Pope Francis The Queen Elizabeth has met Pope Francis for the first time during a one-day visit to Rome, Radio Australia reported.

It is the Queen's first foreign trip since a visit to Australia in 2011.

She gave the pontiff gifts from the royal estates, including a dozen eggs and a bottle of whisky. The 18 items from Buckingham Palace, Windsor, Sandringham and Balmoral also included two types of honey, chutney, soap, and “Coronation Best Bitter” beer.

The pontiff gave the Queen and Prince Philip an orb decorated with a silver cross to deliver to Prince George.

The heads of the Catholic and Anglican churches met privately for about 25 minutes, in what was seen as part of a long process aimed at improving relations between the religions.

It is not known what the sides discussed, but a Vatican spokesman said the Pope would remain neutral about the Falkland Islands, British territory which is also claimed by the pontiff's homeland, Argentina.
