Mongolia, China launch molecular biology laboratory in Ulaanbaatar

AKIPRESS.COM - Minister of Education, Culture and Science of Mongolia Luvsannyam Gantumur and China Ambassador Xing Haiming took part in the launch of a new molecular biology laboratory located in the Armono Corporation's building in Khan-Uul district of Ulaanbaatar, reports The UB Post.

The laboratory was built through the Mongolian Science Park Project, and financed by a $1-million grant from the Chinese government and with $350,000 in support from the President of Mongolia, Tsakhia Elbegdorj.

“It is a huge opportunity for the scientists of the two countries to start scientific cooperation, at this moment when we’re aiming to develop foreign relations in the scientific field,” said Minister Gantumur at the opening ceremony.

University students and scientists from every field will have access to the laboratory. The laboratory enables independent genome, protein and probiotic research, as well as the study of the nutritional content of food products.

“The first independent laboratory complex for molecular biology sets a successful beginning for the establishment of the science park,” said researchers at the opening ceremony.

The results from the laboratory’s studies will be reported to the public, and research conducted at the laboratory is expected to contribute to the economy through the Mongolian Science Park Project.

The laboratory will be used to conduct agricultural and phytogenic studies. Initial studies planned for execution at the laboratory are: the nutritional analysis of food products, a focused study of the components of locally made food products (especially milk and dairy products), a determination of the defining characteristics of milk from Mongolian livestock, and livestock genetics studies.
