Marilyn Monroe's 'Happy Birthday, Mr. President' dress to be auctioned

AKIPRESS.COM - monroe dress The dress Marilyn Monroe infamously wore while singing “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy will be auctioned to the highest bidder in November, USA Today reported.

Monroe wore the flesh-colored dress on May 19, 1962, during a Democratic fundraiser which also served as an early 45th birthday celebration for the President.

In front of some 15,000 guests, Monroe took the stage and sang Happy Birthday, Mr. President at Madison Square Garden.

The sultry performance coupled with First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy’s absence ignited rumors that Monroe and the President were having an affair.

Monroe’s custom Jean Louis dress featured over 2,500 hand-stitched crystals. Monroe wore nothing beneath the dress and had to be sewn into it.

The dress is expected to sell for at least $2 million, according to Darren Julien, president and chief executive of Julien's Auctions, which is holding an auction for the dress on November 17.

According to the auction house, the dress will be on display at the MANA Contemporary in New Jersey and at the Newbridge Silverware Museum of Style Icons (MOSI) in Kildare, Ireland, before being returned to Julien’s Auction House in Los Angeles.

The auction will be held live in Los Angeles and can be accessed online.
