Life in rural Kyrgyzstan: Batken hunter claims he can howl, communicate with wolves

AKIPRESS.COM - 5359ab2a8962243ae7858348d39cc840 Resident of Alga village in Batken region Usyonbai Darmanov claims he's been "talking with wolves" for 12 years.

The 45-year-old man claims his ancestors were well-known hunters. “I decided to follow in the footsteps of my ancestors and hunt. They protected their livestock from the beasts while living in pastures. I shoot off jackals and wolves that come down the mountains to villages for domestic animals. When I was a kid, I used to listen to the wolves howling, and learned how to howl myself,” the hunter told Turmush correspondent.

He says his howling started increasingly resembling the howl of the wild animals every time he did it.

“The howl of female and male wolves differ, just like human voices do,” he said.

Howling helps Darmanov to shoot wolves.

“I howl like a wolf to trap them. Since 2008, I am working with the Hunters Union of Batken. We hunt together. I think my ability helps the local people in protecting their animals,” said Darmanov.

Representative of the Hunters Union of Batken Khamdamali Rakhimov commented to Turmush that since Darmanov's joining the Union, catching wolves became easier. “He is uniquely talented,” he noted.
