Bishkek celebrates Nooruz holiday

AKIPRESS.COM - The festive events on the occasion of the Nooruz holiday are ongoing in Bishkek main square, Ala-Too, on March 21.

Mayor Albek Ibraimov has addressed those gathered with his congratulations.

"Nooruz symbolizes the revival of the nature. This day praises compassion, justice, and unity. I wish you all good health and peace," said the mayor.

Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan Sooronbai Jeenbekov and members of the Government are also taking part in the celebrations.

Nooruz is the day of the vernal equinox, and marks the beginning of spring in the northern hemisphere. Families gather together to observe the rituals.

The UN's General Assembly recognized the International Day of Nowruz in 2010, describing it as a spring festival of Iranian origin, which has been celebrated for over 3,000 years. During the meeting of The Inter-governmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Heritage of the United Nations, held between 28 September – 2 October 2009, Nowruz was officially registered on the UNESCO List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. In response to the UN recognition, Iran unveiled a postage stamp.

The stamp was made public in the presence of the Iranian President during the first International Nowruz Celebrations in Tehran on Saturday, 27 March 2010.
