Nazarbayev extends condolences to President of Sri Lanka over devastating floods and landslides

AKIPRESS.COM - Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev on Monday sent messages of condolences to President of Sri Lanka Maithripala Sirisena over the devastating floods and landslides that killed more than 160 people.

"It is with deep sorrow that the head of state learned the news about numerous fatalities as a result of floods and landslides that struck Sri Lanka on May 28," the message published on official site of Nazarbayev reads.

"I extend condolences to bereaved families and the friendly people of Sri Lanka. To those injured, I wish speedy recovery and soonest reuniting with their families," the president's message read.

The worst flooding in 14 years was brought on by monsoon rains across southwestern portions of the country, according to Sri Lanka's Ministry of Disaster Management. At least 112 people are missing, and the death toll is expected to rise as authorities battle to rescue those still stranded and warn of the possibility of crocodile attacks.

About half a million people have been affected. India and other countries have sent aid.
