101-year-old woman, nicknamed 'Hurricane,' breaks 100-meter sprint record

AKIPRESS.COM - Over the weekend, 101-year-old Julia Hawkins, 82-year-old Christel Donley and 92-year-old Mary Norckauer competed in the USA Track and Field Outdoors Masters Championships, the Daily News reported.

Although Hawkins, nicknamed “Hurricane,” didn’t come in first place — Donley crossed the finish line first — she set a new record for finishing the race in the shortest amount of time for women aged 100 or older.

According to the Denver Post, the Louisiana native finished the sprint in 40.12 seconds, shaving more than six seconds off the current certified record holder.

If Hawkins’ time is certified in December, she will become the new title holder.

“(I) missed my nap for this,” Hawkins joked following the race at Louisiana State University.

"I knew I could do it because I'm in the yard a lot and I keep hearing the phone and come running to get it," she told WBRZ.
