Turkmenistan attends 68th session of Executive Committee of High Commissioner’s Programme

AKIPRESS.COM - Delegation of Turkmenistan led by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Vepa Hadjiev took part in the 68th session of the Executive Committee of the Program of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, which is underway in Geneva from October 2-6.

On October 3, Hadjiev spoke at the session. He pointed out that the global community needed to strengthen its work on resolving the pressing issues of the global agenda related to refugees. He expressed the expediency of resuming work with UNHCR on the implementation of the main directions of the Ashgabat Declaration adopted in May 2012 following the International Conference "Refugees in the Muslim World" held in the Turkmen capital.

A Joint Statement "on Encouragement the Valuable Contribution of the Olympic Teams of Refugees to Consolidation of Peace and Human Rights" was prepared and adopted at the initiative of Turkmenistan at the 36th session of the UN Human Rights Council, held in Geneva, he said.

The participation of the Olympic refugee team in the 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games is the first measure for the practical implementation of the abovementioned statement, he said. In order to further implement the provisions of the Joint Statement, Turkmenistan has developed and started developing the Action Plan jointly with the UN and other authoritative international organizations, Hadjiev said.

Turkmenistan suggested to hold in 2018 an international conference in Turkmenistan under the auspices of the UN on the importance of the participation of refugees in the Olympic movement.
