Life in rural Kyrgyzstan: 62yo Naryn entrepreneur grows lemons for a living

AKIPRESS.COM - Akinaly Nyshanov from Aksy district of Jalal-Abad region built a 8-hectare greenhouse near his home to grow lemons.

The 62-year-old says growing citrus fruits is his hobby.

"6 years ago I watched on TV a story about a resident of Andijan region of Uzbekistan. He brought 34 nursery plants of 3-year-old lemon trees and planted them in his greenhouse and they grew very well. The lemon trees grow well in cool and wet environment," he said.

The entrepreneur uses organic fertilizers only and his greenhouse is covered with double layer of oilcloth so there is no need for extra heating in winter.

"I collect around 50 kg of lemons from 1 tree. Last year, a sudden cold snap damaged harvest, I lost a part of it. Anyway, I collect about 500 kg of lemons per harvest. They go for sale. On a last year income, I bought a car. In 6 years, I spent 250,000 som, which was paid fully and brought extra profit. The price of 1 kg lemons is 150 som," he said.

In the future, he plans to grow bananas. "I think that in our climate allows to grow bananas. I ordered 4 seedlings of bananas from Uzbekistan. I will grow them 1 year as an experiment and if I succeed, I will build another greenhouse for bananas next to my house," he said.
