Life in rural Kyrgyzstan: 70yo man who sews products for brides

AKIPRESS.COM - Kozubay Mamatov, an inhabitant of Samarkandek village, Bakten region makes embroidery for 50 years.

The 70-year-old craftsman produces broidery for the brides.

Mamatovin a comment to Turmush correspondent says that his love for sewing come from his childhood.

He sews blankets and pillows, and his hand-made products can be found at hundreds of homes in this region.

Mamatov and his wife take orders, and his wife helps him with sewing. By sewing dowries they earn about 5,000 som a day.

“My grandmother was a cutter and sewed leather coats. That’s why sewing is an innate talent of mine. All the dowry for my daughters I did by myself. Every Sunday we go to the Samarkendek market to sell our goods. We can earn pretty well," the craftsman says.

During Soviet times he lead a sewing manufacture with about 50-60 employees. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, he worked as a sewing teacher in one of the professional schools. The last five years he teaches young professional at home.

“Thanks to this job, I could bring up 5 children, build my own house and provide my family," Mamatov said.

Koubay Mamatov  and his wife have 5 children: 2 daughters and 3 sons.
