Penjikent-Samarkand checkpoint to resume work on Tajik-Uzbek border after 8 years

AKIPRESS.COM - The Penjikent-Samarkand checkpoint on Tajik-Uzbek border, which was closed 8 years ago, will start operating again this spring, Asia-Plus news agency reports.

To date, the sides are carrying out the preparation works on opening the checkpoint, resuming works on border and customs control, preparing the border infrastructure, a source in the power bloc of the government of Tajikistan said.

Uzbekistan warned the Tajik authorities about the termination of activities of the international Penjikent-Samarkand checkpoint on November 1, 2010.

The note of Uzbekistan stated that the passage of citizens and freights will be terminated on this section of the border. The Uzbek side then did not explain the reasons for closure of checkpoint.

At a moment, there are two international checkpoints on the border of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan that are operating around the clock.
