Full modernization of Nurek HPP requires $700 million

AKIPRESS.COM - Tajikistan needs 10 years and $700 million for the full modernization of the Nurek HPP, according to a source.

Modernization will be carried out in 2 phases. The first phase of the project requires $350 million and these amount of money are allocated by international financial institutions (the World Bank - $225 million, the Asian Development Bank - $60 million). About $57 million of the total sum are grants. The first phase will be implemented within 5 years, Avesta news agency reports.

Experts said that the Government of Tajikistan spent 79 million euros for modernization of the open distribution units. However, other parts of the hydropower station also need rehabilitation.

According to the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources, the capacity of the Nurek HPP in Tajikistan will reach 3,300 megawatts (10% stronger) after modernization.
