Former Brazilian president surrenders to police

AKIPRESS.COM - Brazil’s former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has handed himself in to police after spending two nights at the metalworkers’ union headquarters in São Paulo in defiance of an arrest warrant, The Guardian reported.

He was carried on the shoulders of supporters shouting 'Free Lula!' before being flown to the southern city of Curitiba, where he will begin serving a 12-year sentence for corruption.

Lula was the frontrunner for October's presidential election but his jailing will leave the race wide open.

The former metalworker and trade union activist is an iconic figure for the left in Latin America. He was the first left-wing leader to make it to the Brazilian presidency in nearly half a century.

The crowd had gathered for a Mass to commemorate the former leader's late wife, Marisa Leticia.
