Kazakh foreign minister meets with Syrian government and opposition delegations

AKIPRESS.COM - Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Kairat Abdrakhmanov received Syrian government delegation led by Permanent Representative of Syria to the UN Bashar al-Jaafari on the sidelines of the Astana International Meeting on the Syrian settlement.

Later on, Abdrakhmanov received delegation of the Syrian armed opposition led by Ahmad Toma.

Agenda of the Astana peace talks, the current situation in Syria's Idlib province were discussed in both meetings.

Syrian government thanked the leadership of Kazakhstan for giving a platform for reconciliation talks.

Syrian opposition said "Astana peace talks proved to be the only efficient tool of solving the Syrian crisis," Kazakh foreign ministry said.

Abdrakhmanov, for his part, pointed out the importance of unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to Syria, confidence building between the conflicting parties.

Return of Syrian refugees back to their country was also discussed, the statement said. 

There's been a civil war in Syria for the last seven years, with different groups trying to seize control of the country. The fighting is between soldiers who support the Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, fighters known as rebels who don't want Assad to be in power anymore, and the group that calls itself Islamic State (IS).
