UNICEF expresses concern about violence in Kyrgyzstan affecting children and adolescents

AKIPRESS.COM - UNICEF expressed concern about the violence that occurred in Kyrgyzstan over the last few days, which has affected a number of people, including children and adolescents in a statement issued on August 9.

“UNICEF condemns any misuse, manipulation or engagement of children and adolescents for political purposes,” the statement said.

UNICEF calls on all parties to avoid violence against children and adolescents, and stressed the need to ensure their protection, safety and integrity everywhere at all times.

UNICEF reminded parents and guardians about their responsibility to protect children and adolescents.

“Any adolescent involved in demonstrations should be treated in line with national legislation and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which Kyrgyzstan has obligation to implement,” it said.

UNICEF said it will continue to monitor the situation and support the work of the Government, civil society and other partners to protect and uphold the rights of all children in Kyrgyzstan.
