A village in Osh where ethnic Gypsies live

AKIPRESS.COM - Village Jany-Kystak located near Osh city is majorly a home to ethnic Gypsies dubbed here as Lyuli.

Turmush correspondent visited a festive event organized by a local elder man in the village on the occasion of a circumcision of 2 his little grandsons.

Head of the Lyuli public fund Baharidjan Narmirzayev said that tradition of ethnic Gypsies are similar to traditions of other people.s

"We have the same sunnot toi (festive event on the occasion of circumcision), tushoo toi (the 1st year anniversary of a child), azhi toi (family party on the occasion of return from army), ect. When a child is born, we hold an akyika toi when the mother's side cuts sheep and organizes party for relatives. The father's side cuts cattle and organizes big event. The event begins early in the morning from 6 am. The guests are treated in the morning, served food at lunch and dinner," he said.

He highlighted that no extra spending is made during the family events, because the council of elders controls that.

Bride kidnapping tradition is also practiced among the ethnic Gypsies, he said. There are many traditions similar to those of the Uzbek and Tajik people.

"Bride kidnapping is practiced when the young man and woman love each other, but their parents are against their marriage. After bride kidnapping, parents can't get their daughter back, therefore they agree for marriage," he said.
