AKIPRESS.COM - 5,237 civilians were killed in Ukraine from February 24 to July 24, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said.

According to the UN, 2,019 men, 1,379 women, 143 girls and 164 boys died during the hostilities. Data on the sex of 41 more dead children and 1,491 adults is not yet available.

7,035 people were injured, including 1,384 men, 1,017 women, 150 girls and 215 boys. The sex of 195 children and 4,074 adults is not yet known.

The UN recorded the most civilian casualties in Donetsk and Lugansk regions (3,089 killed and 3,760 injured). 2,848 people were killed and 2,820 were injured on the territory controlled by the Ukrainian authorities. 241 people died, 940 were injured on the territory occupied by the Russian armed forces and affiliated armed groups.

The remaining cases of death or injury occurred in the cities of Kyiv and Cherkasy, Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Kherson, Kyiv, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Sumy, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, Rivne, Vinnytsia, Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk and Zhytomyr regions.

Most of the civilian casualties recorded were caused by the use of explosive weapons with wide area effects, including shelling from heavy artillery, multiple launch rocket systems, missiles and air strikes.

OHCHR noted that the actual figures most probably are considerably higher, as the information from some locations where intense hostilities have been going on has been delayed and many reports are still pending corroboration.
