Kadamjai man makes clay tandoors popular in the south

AKIPRESS.COM - Eliyar Isakov from Kadamjai district of Batken region creates clay tandoors, a type of oven, popular in the south of Kyrgyzstan.

He lives in Khalmion village. In a conversation with Turmush correspondent, Isakov told about his business and the orders he receives.

"First we buy kaolin clay of light gray or light yellow color. It is fireclay because it has excellent thermal properties. Because it's not that easy to find such clay, we order it from the foothills. It's impossible to make a tandoor from simple black earth mass," he said.

Then the clay is mixed with goat or sheep wool and mulberry silkworm yarn, and then it's wrapped in a plastic bag and left for up to 10 days. When it's ready, up to 4-5 tandoors are made out of this mixture in 2 days.

"My grandfather's fathers were also potters. We did not abandoned this business and continued it. We never had unsatisfied customers," he said.

The cost of tandoor depends on the size and complexity of the work and ranges from 2,000 to 12,000 soms.
