Removal of Ombudsperson Abdrakhmatova inconsistent with Kyrgyzstan's membership in Human Rights Council, U.S. Embassy says

AKIPRESS.COM - The Office of the Ombudsman plays an essential role in upholding the rule of law and promoting good governance, the U.S. Embassy said.

"The Kyrgyz Parliament’s vote to remove Atyr Abdrakhmatova following her report on the state of human rights and freedoms in the Kyrgyz Republic raises concerns about the government's commitment to transparency and accountability," the U.S. Embassy said.

It is inconsistent with the Kyrgyz Republic’s membership in the Human Rights Council, the Embassy stated.

On May 3, the Parliament of Kyrgyzstan voted for dismissal of Atyr Abdrakhmatova ahead of term upon suggestion of Ata Jurt Kyrgyzstan faction, which said the Ombudsperson failed to perform her duties.
