Turkmenistan establishes Commission on reducing methane emissions

AKIPRESS.COM - The state information agency TDH announced on July 2 the establishment of a commission in Turkmenistan to reduce methane emissions.

The Commission was created to "strengthen state control over the efficiency of work to systematically reduce greenhouse gas emissions, mainly methane emissions, arising in various sectors of the economy", according to the agency.

The establishment of the Commission was not mentioned at the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers held on the same day.

Bloomberg reported on May 31 that the United States was in process of "serious" talks with Turkmenistan to reduce methane emissions. The parties are preparing to sign an agreement under which the US will provide financial and expert support in eliminating sources of gas leaks.

The Guardian reported this May the discovery of large methane leaks in Turkmenistan.

Fields near the Caspian Sea became the source of 2.6 million tons of methane emitted last year, and another 1.8 million tons of greenhouse gas leaked into the atmosphere at a field in the east of the country. This is equivalent to 366 million tons of carbon dioxide in terms of atmospheric impact, which is more than the UK emitted during the whole last year.
