Turkmenistan joins Global Methane Pledge

AKIPRESS.COM - President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov, speaking at the COP28 climate summit in Dubai, announced the country's accession to the Global Methane Pledge, TDH reports.

The President noted that taking into account the recommendations of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, Ashgabat prepared and approved the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) of Turkmenistan to the Paris Climate Agreement in May 2022. This document provides for a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 20% in 2030 relative to 2010 levels.

According to the head of state, the new document provides for the implementation of measures to reduce harmful emissions in all sectors, and primarily in the oil and gas, transport, electric power, agro-industrial complex and construction. Work is carried out in the fuel and energy sector to to reduce emissions by increasing the volume of utilization of associated petroleum gas and reducing losses of natural gas during the transportation.

"Today, from this high rostrum, Turkmenistan officially announces its accession to the Global Methane Pledge," President Serdar Berdimuhamedov emphasized.

It was also reported that a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) to develop regional programs aimed at transferring climate technologies to Turkmenistan and Central Asian states on November 13.

"We consider this document to be the first step for opening a UN Regional Center for Climate Change Technologies in Central Asia in Turkmenistan," the president added.
